Free Checked Baggage Allowance

The following are the free allowances for checked baggage for each class of service on Hainan Airlines, between the United States and China and between Canada and China. Passengers with checked baggage exceeding the allowance stated below will be charged for excess baggage.

Remarks: If charges are paid in other currencies, charges will be calculated based on the exchange rate at the time of departure. Baggage regulations of the Canada-Beijing segment will apply to connecting flights within Mainland China operated by Hainan Airlines provided that the passenger is connecting on the same ticket. Baggage regulations of the Canada-Beijing segment will apply to connecting flights within Mainland China operated by Hainan Airlines on separate tickets from the Canada-Beijing segment, provided that the connecting time is within 24 hours.

Other Weight Limitations

Limitations on weight and dimensions for checked in baggage Checked in baggage shall be packed, securely, be able to bear certain pressure, can be safely loaded or unloaded under normal operations, and must subject to the following rules:

  • Two bag items or more shall not be tied together as one.
  • Baggage cannot be inserted by other items.
  • Bamboo baskets, string bags, straw ropes, straw bags and other similar articles cannot be used as baggage.
  • Package with dangerous markings or tags cannot be used. The dangerous markings or tags shall be removed or covered before the package can be used.
  • Baggage shall include the name, detailed address and phone number of the passenger.
  • Sawdust, rice husk or grass items cannot be used as padding in the baggage.
  • We strongly recommend you do not lock checked baggage as TSA officials have the authority to break (non-TSA approved) locks, during routine inspection of baggage.
  • Hainan Airlines cannot accept checked baggage exceeding 45 kg and / or dimensions over 40×60×100 cm.

Special Baggage Handling

The following articles can be transported as checked baggage on the condition that meet all requirements of the Conditions of Carriage.

  • Precision instruments, electrical appliances such as video players, television sets, bicycles and audio appliances. If carried in checked baggage, they should be packed with extreme care and are not included in the free baggage allowance.
  • Equipment used in physical sports, including guns and ammunition in this instance.
  • Domesticated dogs, cats, birds or other pets, seeing-eye, hearing-ear, and assisting dogs.
  • Diplomatic pouches and confidential documents.
  • Sharp-edged and blunt tools except controlled knives should be placed into checked baggage for transportation. This includes, but not limited to: Kitchen knives, table knives, fruit knives, craftwork knives, scissors and pencil sharpeners, as well as steel files, iron wimbles, axes, short sticks, hammers, etc.
  • For passengers who nurse patients with severe illnesses, they may bring a small quantity of medical articles and appliances such as alcoholic cotton, oxygen bags and sedatives upon advance approval of airport authorities or Hainan Airlines.

Prohibited & Restricted Articles

Prohibited Articles:

The following articles are prohibited from being checked as baggage or carried onboard the aircraft:

  • Dangerous articles: Includes inflammable and explosive materials; oxidants; poisonous and infectious materials; radioactive materials; corrosive materials; magnetized materials; anesthetics, especially provocative materials or materials of a similar nature; materials with the potential liability to damage and contaminate aircraft, etc.
  • Guns, ammunition, emulation peashooters, lighters in the shape of guns and other types of assault weapons and appliances, excluding equipment used in physical sports.
  • Army and police equipment.
  • Restricted knives: daggers, bayonets, triangular knives (including those used in mechanics), flick knives and other cutting tools with single, double or triple blades.
  • Live animals, fruits with strong offensive smells such as durians.

Unsuitable Items in Checked Baggage

Articles that require special care must be carried on board by the passenger and should not be packed into checked baggage.

Examples include: Important files and documents, securities, currencies, bank drafts, jewelry, cameras, mobile phones, computers, valuable items, including metals gold and silver. Valuable articles, antiques, calligraphy and paintings, fragile items, perishables, samples, travel documents, etc.

If a loss occurs to these items due to the passenger’s breach of the above policy, the airline will not be held liable and will only compensate for the loss of baggage according to its lost baggage policies.

Notes:

  1. Carry-on baggage is defined as the baggage passengers are allowed to carry on board, according to the specific size limits of the routing.
  2. Additional charges shall apply to carry-on baggage exceeding the weight or size limitations according to the baggage allowance policy.
  3. Passengers carrying large amount of valuable articles on board will need to adhere to seat-occupied baggage and may be required to purchase extra seats on the flight. Passengers shall present all documentation and required certificates for carrying such items, issued by the relevant administrative department.

Baggage Liability

Hainan Airlines aims to transport your baggage with care. Should your baggage not arrive on the same flight as you or is damaged, please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Lost Baggage

If your baggage does not arrive on the flight on which you traveled, Hainan Airlines will assist you in locating it and returning it to you as promptly as possible. Please fill out the Hainan Airlines Lost & Found Investigation Form and Fax to: +1 (206) 242 1210 or email lostbags@hnair.com.

Baggage Tracing

We will trace your baggage with our Baggage Inquiry System and keep you informed of the tracing progress. You may contact local airport staff to file your report and for any assistance.

Baggage Transfer

Upon locating your baggage, we will inform you immediately and deliver it to the designated address you have provided.

Baggage Damage

  1. If your baggage is damaged and cannot be repaired on the spot, we will send it to a professional repair shop (or a contracted company of Hainan Airlines) for repair or replacement with a new bag. Alternatively we will compensate you in cash for the typical cost of the repair.
  2. Damages should be reported to and resolved by Hainan’s baggage services office at the airport location where the damage was discovered. If this is not possible, please contact our airport staff before leaving the airport.
  3. We will need a copy of your ticket and claim report and our airport/baggage representative will make a visual inspection of the damage.
  4. Please contact local Hainan Airlines ticket offices directly for further assistance.

In the course of normal handling your baggage may show evidence of wear and tear. In addition, the automated systems used by airlines may cause scratches or nicks during handling.

We do not accept libility for the following:

  1. Damage to baggage, caused by defect, quality and manufacturing flaws.
  2. Normal wear and tear to baggage.
  3. Damage due to protruding parts such as; straps, pockets, pull handles, hanger hooks, wheels/feet or other items attached to the baggage.
  4. The damage to oversized/over packed bags.

Limitation of Liability

Hainan Airlines will take responsibility for any loss, damage, contamination or partial loss occurring during the period we are transporting your baggage. Baggage compensation may be divided into the following categories: temporary incidental expenses, compensation for loss of baggage, loss of articles inside of baggage (pilferage) and compensation for damaged baggage.

Compensation is governed in accordance with applicable regulations in the Warsaw Pact and Montreal Convention (for international flights), with applicable items in the Civil Aviation Law of the People’s Republic of China (For travel within the PRC.

Time Limitation on Claims

In the case of damage to checked baggage, passengers should file a complaint with Hainan Airlines forthwith after the discovery of the damage, within seven days from the date of receipt. Please email lostbags@hnair.com

In the case of delay, the complaint must be made at the latest within twenty-one days from the date on which the baggage has been placed at his or her disposal.

Safety Regulations

The Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) has issued a regulation entitled the Bulletin of Prohibition on Carrying Lighters and Matches When Taking Civil Flights on Effective April 7, 2008 passengers taking civilian flights are prohibited to bring lighters and matches. Passengers shall treat the relevant items and are responsible for consequences such as flight delay or missing flights caused by violation of the regulations.

The Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) has issued a regulation entitled the Bulletin of Prohibition on Carry-on Liquids When Taking Domestic Flights on March 14, 2008.

In the interest of the safety of passengers and their property, CAAC has revised the regulation of the carriage of liquids in passengers’ carry-on baggage on domestic flights. The regulation is described as follows:

  1. Passengers taking domestic flights are prohibited to carry on board liquids. However, those liquids may be packed in checked baggage on the condition that their packaging meets the relevant regulations of civil aviation transportation.
  2. Passengers may carry on board a small quantity of cosmetic items for their personal use when traveling with a maximum of one piece for each type of cosmetic. The volume of each cosmetic container may not exceed 100 ml. These containers should be put into their own bag and undergo security screening.
  3. Tax-free liquids taken into China by passengers from abroad who need to connect to domestic flights at Chinese airports may be carried in transparent plastic bags with seals. They can be carried by passengers if there are relevant receipts and a confirmation of the security check.
  4. Passengers traveling with infants may request that airlines provide free on board liquid dairy products. Necessary medicines taken by patients with diabetes and other illnesses should be kept by the crew after confirmation of the security check.
  5. Liquids taken by passengers taking international and domestic flights should follow the relevant regulations in the Bulletin about Limitations on Taking Liquids on Civil Aviation Aircraft issued on March 17, 2007.
  6. Passengers themselves are responsible for consequences such as missing flights caused by violation of the above regulations.
