The best time to visit Guangzhou is between October and December. Guangzhou has a subtropical climate that is pleasant throughout the four seasons and has the least variable average temperature in China besides Kunming. Guangzhou has abundant rainfall all year round. The monsoon season is from April to June and typhoons are expected in August and September.
Guangzhou rains in springtime and is hot in summer with frequent typhoons. Autumn is warm but has cool breezes and this perfect weather continues till November and December and this is the best time to visit. Winter is cold but lasts only for a short while. When the northern part of China is still experiencing heavy snow in January, the “Flower City” Guangzhou will be enjoying early spring with blooming flowers.
By air
Guangzhou’s new Baiyun International Airport is located at the juncture south of Renhe Town in Baiyun District and east of Xinhua Street in Huadu District and is 28 kilometers from Haizhu Square in the city centre. It is the first large airport hub built according to international standards and is also one of China’s top three airport hubs. In partnership with 33 airlines, the airport has launched over 110 routes to more than 100 cities in China and around the world. It is also the airport base for China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
By rail
Guangzhou is easily accessible via a large number of rail routes. The Beijing to Guangzhou rail route connects northern and southern China. There are also express trains to Shenzhen, Dongguan, Shantou and other provincial cities as well as Hong Kong.
By road
Guangzhou is the gateway to many cities in the Guangdong province and other parts of China via its numerous highways. It takes one hour to reach the Pearl River Delta from Guangzhou.
Guangzhou’s new Baiyun International Airport is located at the juncture south of Renhe Town in Baiyun District and east of Xinhua Street in Huadu District, and is 17 kilometers from the former airport and 28 kilometers from Haizhu Square in the city centre. It costs RMB 100 to take a taxi from the airport to the city centre and only a 15-minute drive via the expressway. There are expressways connecting the airport to the city and its surrounding areas, making it convenient and easy. Currently, there are nine expressways from the airport to the city centre.
Many of the four-star and five-star hotels can be found along Huangshidonglu Road. The lights shining from the hotels form a beautiful and scenic view in the evening. There are many resorts located near, at the top and the foot of Baiyun Mountain and also by the Pear River. Resorts located near the mountain and waterway provide a beautiful environment for a relaxing holiday from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Guangzhou is a city famous for its history and culture. As early as 9th century, during the Zhou dynasty, the Baiyue people were already interacting with the people of the Chu Kingdom living in the mid-section of the Yangtze River. Together they built “Chu Ting”, the initial name for Guangzhou. It was a thriving city during the Qin and Han dynasties and it became a port, which was also the starting point of the maritime “Silk Road” during the Han and Tang dynasties. It was also the earliest trading port in China. Guangzhou is also the birthplace of revolutions in China.
Many historical incidents happened here including the famous Sanyuanli Militia Battle against the British, the Huanghuagang Uprising and the Guangzhou Uprising. Sun Yat-sen founded the Huangpu Military Academy in Guangzhou and thrice established a political regime. Mao Zedong founded the Institute of the Peasant Movement and nurtured many core leaders of the revolution.
Guangzhou, also known as “Yangcheng” and “Suicheng”, is one of China’s historical and cultural cities. It is a top tourist destination and also a well-known hometown of many overseas Chinese. Guangzhou is also a shopping and gourmet paradise. Snacks with distinctive flavors in Laoxiguan, various markets around the city, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Beijinglu Pedestrian Street make a visit to Guangzhou unforgettable.
- Baiyun Mountain: located north of the city, it is one of the famous mountains in Southern Guangdong and is also known as the “No.1p Beauty in Yangcheng” and “No. 1 Mountain in Nanyue”. It is made up of more than 30 mountain peaks. The whole city and the Pearl River can be seen from the mountain top.
- The Museum of the Tomb of Nanyue King: With a history of over 2,100 years, the tomb of Zhao Mei, the second king of Western Han Dynasty, is located on Xianggang Mountain which is west of Yuexiu District. He was the grandson of Zhao Tuo, the general who unified Lingnan in the Qin Dynasty. There are over 1,000 historical relics, among which the delicately carved jade articles and bronze ware depicting Han, Chu and Yue cultural heritage are deemed the most precious.
- Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street: it is one of China’s most bustling pedestrian streets and a landmark of Guangzhou known as the “Xiguan Business Gallery” - one of the top ten tourist attractions of Yangcheng. It is full of ancient sotto porticos and unique teahouses, combining the architecture of southern Europe and Guangzhou.
- Huangpu Military Academy: Huangpu Military Academy, also known as R.O.C Military Academy, was founded on June 16, 1924 in Changzhou, Huangpu. The Academy was the result of the first KMT-CCP cooperation and was founded by Sun Yat-sen with the assistance of the Soviet Union government and the Chinese Communist Party.
- Mausoleum of 72 Martyrs at Huanghuagang: located at the southern foot of Baiyun Mountain, the memorial is to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Guangzhou Uprising initiated by Tung Meng Hui led by Sun Yat-sen. It bears witness to the challenges of modern China’s revolution movement.
