When to go & Weather

The climate of Hohhot is continental with four distinct seasons and significant temperature spreads between day and night. The average annual temperature is 6 C (42.8 F). Winter in Hohhot is cold and long with an average temperature of -10 C (14 F).

The best time to visit Hohhot is from April to October, while the best time to go to the grassland is from middle July to early September when the temperature is 15 C (59 F) to 25 C (77 F). Also, the famous Nadam Fair is held during July or August. This traditional festival occupies an important place in the life of Mongolian people. Nadam means "entertainment" or "game" in Mongolian. Horse racing, wrestling, and archery are called men's three skills. Tasting savory milk tea, listening to melodious music from horse-head string instruments, living in gers and watching stars will bring you back to nomadic times. Nadam Fair is also the trade fair for farm products, such as mutton, beef, cheese, butter, and yogurt. However, remember to bring a coat or jacket even in summer since the temperature drops dramatically in the evening.

Hohhot Baita (White Pagoda) Airport owes its name to the Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda, one of the historical attractions in Hohhot which lies 5.6km (3.5 miles) southeast to the airport; it was opened in 1958 and then expanded during 1985-1987 to enable it a yearly capacity of handling 1,000,000 passengers. Presently connected to 28 domestic cities by 26 air routes, it serves international scheduled flights to Ulan Bator as well as charter flights to Hong Kong, Russia and Thailand. An expansion project which covers a 3,600-meter-long (2 miles) runway, a new terminal building and the expansion of the parking apron is being carried out to enlarge its yearly capacity up to 3,000,000 passengers.

By Train

Hohhot has an extensive railway network, connecting with Beijing, and Hailar to the east; Baotou, Xian, Lanzhou, and Yinchuan to the west; Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo to the southeast, plus international trains to Ulan Bator and Moscow. Tickets can be bought or booked at railway stations, ticket centers, and travel agencies. Be sure to book your ticket at least three days in advance, earlier during the Spring Festival and Golden Weeks (May 1 and October 1 Holidays).

By Bus

Daily buses are available to link Hohhot with other major cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Datong, and Baotou. While bus transportation is less expensive than air or train travel, in terms of safety and security it may not be your best choice. Getting Around By City-bus Currently, there are about 60 bus lines opened in Hohhot City, which can reach to the city's every corner. Most of the buses have no conductor, so you are required to prepare CNY1 before getting on the buses. On the other hand, the mini buses with conductors often charge by distance, costing around CNY1.5.

By Taxi

Thousands of taxis provide around-the-clock service at reasonable prices. During daytime, the flag-down rate is CNY6 for the first 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) and CNY1 for per kilometer thereafter. Please note that the taxi of Santana and Fukang charge CNY1.5 for every additional kilometer.

History

Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China, lies between the Yinshan Mountain and the Yellow River.

Hohhot, which is Mongolian for "green city", dates from 306 B.C. and throughout its long history has been an important cultural centre of the region. Today it is the most important city in Inner Mongolia and is home to 36 different ethnic groups.
