- Passengers must keep batteries and equipment with themselves or in carry-on baggage- not in their checked baggage and. Lithium batteries should not be placed in checked baggage, but they may be packed carry-on baggage.
- If original packaging is not available for spare batteries, effectively insulate battery terminals by isolating the batteries from contact with other batteries and metal. Do not permit a loose spare battery to come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry.
- Place each spare battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package, or place tape across the battery's contacts to isolate terminals. Isolating terminals prevents short-circuiting.
- Lithium metal batteries are non-rechargeable batteries discarded once they are depleted.
- Larger lithium metal batteries that contain over 2 grams of lithium are forbidden.
- Lithium ion batteries are the rechargeable batteries used in computers, cell phones, and other devices. "Larger" lithium ion batteries are rated between 100 and 300 watt-hours (8-25 g equivalent lithium content, or ELC.)
- Passengers are allowed one larger lithium ion battery installed in a device, plus up to 2 spare larger lithium ion batteries.
- These are in addition to any smaller lithium ion batteries. For smaller lithium ion batteries, basic rules apply.
For detailed information about the transportation of lithium batteries and other latest information, please visit www.safetravel.dot.gov.
Notes:
Lithium Batteries. When you see this term alone on SafeTravel pages, it refers to both lithium ion batteries and lithium metal batteries. Lithium polymer batteries are a kind of lithium ion battery, and so are also included in this term.
Lithium Ion Batteries. These are rechargeable lithium batteries, like the ones found in cameras, cell phones, laptop computers, and radio-controlled toys. Lithium polymer batteries are a kind of lithium ion battery.
Larger Lithium Ion Batteries contain between 8 and 25 grams Equivalent Lithium Content (ELC). Some very large after-market laptop computer batteries, and some batteries used for professional audio-visual application, fall within this definition.
Smaller Lithium Ion Batteries contain up to 8 grams Equivalent Lithium Content. Cell phone batteries and most laptop computer batteries fall below the 8 gram threshold. Lithium Ion Batteries with over 25 grams ELC are forbidden in air travel.
Lithium Metal Batteries. These are lithium batteries which can not be recharged. They are designed to be discarded once their initial charge is used up.
Larger Lithium Metal Batteries contain over two grams of lithium, and are forbidden in air travel. (No common consumer lithium metal batteries are in the “larger” category.)
Spare Batteries. Spare batteries, also called “loose” batteries, are batteries which are not installed in equipment. A lithium ion battery inside your computer is an installed battery. A battery you carry separately in case that battery runs low is a spare battery.
Watt-hour. For the purposes of this page, the watt-hour serves as an indirect measure of Equivalent Lithium Content (ELC). 8 grams ELC are about equal to 100 watt-hours.
Precision electronic equipment
- Precision equipment refers to accurate measuring instruments, precision astronomy observing instruments, precision remote instruments, precision medical instruments and other scientific instruments.
- Electronic equipment refers to all instruments powered by an electronic source, such as a TV or related apparatus, air conditioner, refrigeration unit, computer, and other equipments.
- Normally, Hainan does not accept precision equipment and electronic equipment as checked baggage. All of these instruments must be shipped as cargo, if the service is available.
- Size limitation: weight must not exceed 32 kg (70lbs) and the total length of three sizes must not exceed 158 cm (62inches).
- The instruments must be properly packaged to prevent damage during the transportation.
- Charges 110 USD for each.
- Hainan is not liable for the instruments, and passengers must sign the limited liability baggage tag.
Dry Ice
Hainan allows passengers to put dry ice of up to 5 pounds (2.2 kg) in their carry-on baggage or checked baggage.
The container or package must be well-ventilated to allow the emission of carbon dioxide gas. The container or package must bear a sign indicating the content, net weight and its volatile property. Hainan does not transport any foamed plastic cooler containing dry ice.
A service charge of 35 USD shall be imposed for any checked baggage containing dry ice.
Any dry ice exceeding 5 pounds (2.2 kg) in weight must be transported as cargo, if the service is available.
Compressed gas cylinders
- Hainan Airlines may accept one self-inflating life jacket that contains no more than two small carbon dioxide cylinders plus no more than two spare cylinders as checked or carry-on baggage. Self-inflating devices or equipment containing compressed gas cylinders (e.g., rafts, life jackets, avalanche rescue backpacks, and paintball cartridges) are not allowed.
- Compressed gas cylinders, including scuba tanks, meeting current TSA requirements of having the regulator valve completely disconnected from the cylinder, may be transported as carry-on or checked baggage.TSA regulation: Compressed gas cylinders are allowed in checked baggage or as a carry-on ONLY if the regulator valve is completely disconnected from the cylinder and the cylinder is no longer sealed (i.e. the cylinder has an open end). The cylinder must have an opening to allow for a visual inspection inside.
- TSA Security Officers will NOT remove the seal or regulator valve from the cylinder at the checkpoint. If the cylinder is sealed (i.e. the regulator valve is still attached), the cylinder is prohibited and not permitted through the security checkpoint, regardless of the reading on the pressure gauge indicator. Our Security Officers must visibly ensure that the cylinder is completely empty and that there are no prohibited items inside.
