- The following gear cannot be considered as checked baggage
Due to large sizes and complexity in handling, some sports gear cannot be put into storage areas on board or cannot be dealt with through the baggage system at the airport.
Therefore, we will not accept the following gear as normal sports equipments for consignment: light boats, hang gliders, canoes, kites, rafts and sail boards.
Hainan Airlines does not accept these articles as checked baggage. They should be transported as cargo. Please directly consult the local Hainan Airlines cargo transportation department or their agents for information.
Archery Sets Each passenger may replace a piece of free baggage with an archery outfit. Bows and arrows should be preserved carefully and appropriately into firm containers with covers especially designed for transportation. Archery gear in excess of the free baggage allowance will be charged according to current charging standards of overweight baggage. Except between China and North America, overweight charging is computed by weight on other air routes, calculated at 1.5% of the regular price of the economy class passenger ticket per kg. Limited release tags processed when receiving baggage claim checks should be labeled on the archery gear which has not been put into boxes with solid sides. Hainan Airlines will not compensate for this kind of baggage. Acceptable boxes for checking:
Charges for domestic flights are according to the ordinary charging standards. Charges for international flights between China and North America:
- Hainan Airlines permits one piece of baggage included in the free checked baggage allowance to be replaced for transportation by one set of ski/snowboard gear which should be transported only as checked baggage. A set of ski/snowboard gear is defined as follows: a ski bag with at most two sets of skis and a boot bag, or a bag for snow boards with at most two boards inside; The properly packed skis and snowboards may not exceed the size limitation of 62 inches.
- If ski/snowboarding gear exceeds the weight limit as free checked baggage, there is only one set of ski/snowboarding gear for each passenger to be applied to special charging policies, namely being charged a fee of 33% of a standard charging unit. [Annotation: Each charging standard is 110 UD dollars. If RMB is used for payment, the exchange rate on the date the overweight check is completed shall be applied. Other ski/snowboarding gear which exceed the weight limit on free checked baggage will be charged according to ordinary charging standards of over limit baggage.
All other international flights:

- Each passenger may take only one set of ski gear subject to these special charges. If within the weight limit on free baggage, ski gear should be charged according to the above standards. If beyond the limitation, they should be charged according to the above or charging standards of ordinary overweight baggage, whichever is lower.
- All the gear should be put into hard-shelled containers especially designed for transportation. If they are packed using other materials, responsibility-free tags (processed when receiving baggage claim checks) should be labeled on so that Hainan Airlines will not compensate for this kind of baggage.
- Acceptable bags for checking:
Charges for Domestic Flights are according to ordinary baggage standards. Charges for International Flights:
- Hainan Airlines permits one piece of baggage included in the free baggage allowance to be replaced by one diving bag with diving gear inside to be transported within the weight limitation. Diving gear may include empty diving tanks and fishing spears.
- Each set of diving gear exceeding the weight limitation on free checked baggage should be charged a fee of a standard charging unit. [Annotation: Each charging standard is 110 US dollars. If paid in RMB, the exchange rate on the date when overweight check is completed shall be applied.]

- Surf boards Hainan Airlines allows surfing gear to be transported as checked baggage. The total size (length+ width +height) of each piece of surfing set should be less than 277 cm or 109 inches and no more than 203 cm or 80 inches. This includes a piece of sail surfboard with masts, arm shanks and sails.
- Hainan Airlines does not allow surfing gear to be included in the free baggage allowance. Only one set of surfing equipment for each passenger can be applied to special charging policies, namely being charged a fee of 50% of a standard charging unit. [Annotation: Each charging standard unit is 110 UD dollars. If RMB is used for payment, the exchange rate on the date the overweight check is completed shall be applied.] Other surfing gear shall be charged according to ordinary charging standards of over limit baggage.

If they are not packed by using such containers, responsibility-free tags (processed when receiving baggage claim checks) should be labeled on so that Hainan Airlines will not compensate for this kind of baggage. Excess value cannot be declared for these items.
Charges for domestic flights are according to ordinary checked baggage standards.
Charges for International flights between China and North America:
Water Skiing Gear A Water-skiing board bag containing one or at most two sets of skis inside, provided that the length of the water skis does not exceed 43 inches (107 cm). will be accepted as of one piece of free baggage.
- There is a special overweight baggage charge for a pair of water skis. The special charge for each set of water ski equipment is equal to the corresponding overweight charge of baggage weighing 3 kg.
- Water skis not exceeding the free baggage allowance are free of charge.
- If water-skiing equipment exceeds the free baggage limit, special charging policies are applicable to only one set of water-skiing gear for each passenger. A fee of 33% of a standard charging unit or 900 RMB/110 USD.
- Other water-skiing gear which exceeds the free checked baggage limit shall be charged according to normal excess baggage rates.
All other International Flights
There is a special overweight baggage charge for a pair of water-skiing boards. The special charge for each set of water-skiing is equal to the corresponding overweight charge of baggage weighing 3 kg;
- Each passenger may take only one set of water-skiing gear applied to this special charge. If not included in the free baggage allowance, water-skiing gear will to be charged according to the above standards. If included but overweight, they will be charged according to the above special charge or the standard charge of ordinary overweight baggage, whichever is lower.
- Hainan Airlines is not responsible for damage to water-skiing gear which has not been packed properly into hard sided cases. Excess value cannot be claimed for water-skiing boards.
- Hainan Airlines permits each passenger to replace a piece of free baggage with two hockey sticks or two lacrosse sticks bound together.
- If hockey and lacrosse sticks exceed the weight limitation for free checked baggage, they will be charged due as overweight. (Except between China and North America) Overweight baggage charges are calculated at 1.5% of the price of the economy class passenger ticket per kg on the day the overweight check is filled; between China and North America, overweight charges are computed by the number of bags.
- Hockey and lacrosse sticks should be put into solid containers with hard sides especially designed for transportation. If they are not packed by using such containers, limited release tags (processed when receiving baggage claim checks) should be labeled. Hainan Airlines will not compensate for this kind of baggage. Hockey and lacrosse sticks are exempt from excess value declaration.

If paid in RMB, the exchange rate on the day the Overweight Baggage Check is completed shall be applied.] Other golf gear which exceeds weight limits on free checked baggage shall be charged according to normal charging standards of excess baggage.
Charges for all other international flights
- There are special bag charges for golf sets: a golf bag and a pair of golf shoes;
- Charges equal that of the corresponding overweight baggage weighing 6 kg. Each passenger may take a golf bag and a pair of golf shoes subject to this charging standard.
- If the weight of golf outfit exceeds that of the free baggage allowance, it will be charged according to the above special charging or charging standards of common overweight baggage, whichever is lower.
- If the weight of golf gear exceeds that of the free baggage by 15 kg, the excessive overweight part will be charged as ordinary overweight baggage. Namely, the first 15 kg should be charged as overweight baggage weighing 6kg according to the special charging standard; each 1 kg in excess of the first 15kg will be charged as ordinary overweight baggage.

Hainan Airlines permits one piece of baggage included in the free baggage allowance to be replaced by one set of fishing tackle (including two fishing rods with reels, fishing baskets, fishing nets, a pair of long boots and a box for fishing tackle).
Fishing tackle within the weight limit on free checked baggage are carried free of charge. Those beyond the weight limit will be charged according to charging standards for overweight baggage.
Containers for fishing rods may not exceed 62 inches (158 cm). Those exceeding this size should be transported as cargo. Fishing rods, fishing baskets, fishing nets and long boots should be packaged carefully and appropriately in solid containers with covers especially designed for transportation.
If they are packed using other materials, limited release tags (processed when receiving baggage claim checks) should be labeled on so that Hainan Airlines is exempt from being responsible for damage to the fishing equipment which cannot have an excess value declared.

Sporting Goods – Camping
- Hainan Airlines permits passengers to replace free baggage with camping gear which include but are not limited to the following articles: tents, backpacks and sleeping bags.
- Articles can be transported as fragile articles including: cloth, plastic, ethylene or other articles made of materials resistant to friction, as well as articles with aluminum racks, outer counters, back belts, buttons and other protruding parts.
- Hainan Airlines is responsible for damage to articles which are considered fragile. According to regulations of dangerous articles, lanterns, stoves and heaters using liquid fuels, as well as dimethylmethane, butane or materials with a similar nature are not allowed to be transported as baggage.
Firearms/Ammunition

According to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) baggage transportation regulations and Hainan Airlines conditions and the carriage of baggage transportation, baggage taken by passengers can be transported on the condition that they are in compliance with the following articles on transportation of various sporting equipment and weight limitations:
Guns/bullets used in recreational sports:
- Guns and bullets, used for recreational sports, must be declared when booking seats or buying tickets. These items can only be accepted after Hainan Airlines approval is received.
- Passengers should transfer the articles by themselves 90 minutes before the departure of the flight to have consignment procedures conducted.
- Passengers are obliged to make sure that small arms and ammunition are accompanied by necessary legal licenses and approval documents, including export/import attestations and approval girds authorized by local authorities or the state.
- When ready for checking, bullets should be removed from guns. Guns and bullets should be packed separately by using opaque and solid containers for outer coverage. Approval from Hainan Airlines must be obtained.
- The maximum weight for each passenger is 5kg.
- Bullets of a group of passengers cannot be packed together for checking. They should be packed into separate boxes. Guns that are packed correctly see #4 will be considered as and checked as regular baggage.
- Guns and bullets used in recreational sports checked by passengers are not included in the free baggage allowance. They will be charged as overweight registered baggage. (Except between China and North America, overweight charging is computed by weight on international flights. Overweight baggage charges are calculated at 1.5% of the regular fare of the economy class passenger ticket per kg on the day the Overweight Baggage Check is completed.
- Acceptable packaging:
- Hainan Airlines only permits non motorized touring, racing or tandem bicycles to be checked as baggage. The airline only permits bicycles weighing up to and including 70 Lbs. or 32 kg for baggage transportation. When bicycles are to be transported as baggage, Hainan’s approval should be gained in advance to ensure it will fit on all aircraft within the passenger’s itinerary. Bicycles which exceed 70 Lbs. or 32 kg in weight must be shipped as cargo.
- Hainan Airlines permits each passenger to take one non-motorized bicycle or two at the most, packed within one box as checked luggage. Bicycles that are packed correctly (see #7 below) will be considered as and checked as regular baggage.
- If the weight of the bicycle(s) is within the free allowance of checked baggage, there will be no charge for them. Once the weight limit is exceeded, excess will be charged according to charging standards for over limit baggage. Overweight charging is computed by quantity on routes between China and North America, and by weight on other air routes. Overweight baggage charges are calculated at 1.5% of the price of the economy class passenger ticket per kg on the day the Overweight Baggage Check is completed.
- Preparations for bicycle consignment. Pedals of bicycles are to be removed or switched towards interior. Handlebars must be switched to one side; Bicycles are to be put into solid boxes or bags especially designed for transportation; For safety, please deflate tires.
- Each passenger may replace a piece of free baggage with a bowling ball bag.
- A set of bowling gear includes: 1-3 bowling balls and a pair of bowling shoes. Hainan Airlines permits at most 3 bowling balls to be put into a suitcase or a bowling ball bag.
- Bowling cleansers which contain a great amount of acetone or alcohol with volumes more than 70% are considered as dangerous articles and cannot be transported as checked baggage or carry-on baggage.
- If bowling gear fall within the weight limitation on free checked baggage, there will be no charge additional for them. Once beyond the weight limit, the overweight checked bag will be charged according to charging standards for over limit baggage. (Except between China and North America).
