History

Xi’an, called Chang’an in ancient times, has a very long history. In Xi’an, one can still feel the time-honored and profound aspects of Chinese civilization, including culture, customs, virtue, tradition and even dregs. As the old saying goes, “Chang’an has been the imperial capital since the ancient times”. In the tremendous splendor of such dynasties as Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang, Xi’an, which used to be called together with Athens, Cairo and Rome as the four ancient capitals of the world, shows its prominent air as an imperial capital. From the 11th century B.C. to about A.D. 10th century, about 13 dynasties or regimes established their capitals in Xi’an. As a result, Xi’an has accumulated a wealth of historical relics. In 1981, Xi’an was rated by the UNESCO as one of the most Famous Historical Cities of the World.

Tips & Articles

In Today’s Xi’an, you can see the city wall standing there as in ancient times and the wild goose pagodas towering above the clouds, but also find many skyscrapers, cars and even snack bars, where the diners enjoy various delicacies. Lots of national treasures are secured inside the high-tech display cabinet of Shaanxi History Museum; each deal is imbued with the antique bookish air in the academy of classical learning; the modern bars and coffee houses across Defu Lane clash with history. The ancient capital with a history of over 1000 years has never ceased its steady and firm step forward. It’s hard to summarize and classify Xi’an in simple terms. In Xi’an, the past and the present have never separated from each other. You can’t have your own impressions unless you try to savor it with a peaceful mind.
